Alice

By Brendan Maddock

Alice Krimsee lived in a small cottage in the English countryside with her father. To separate herself from the dreariness of reality she would keep her mind occupied with stories and fairy tales. Her favorite being "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland".

Alice felt connected to the story. In her mind, she was "Alice". In her father's garden, she would often sip tea with the company of her stuffed animals and enjoy long conversations with the local insects and flowers. One day, while she was pleasantly speaking with a group of daffodils, a curious white rabbit scurried past. She thought to herself, "He must be late."

She chased after the rabbit. He led her through a meadow and into the nearby treeline. He quickly disappeared behind a grove of exceedingly tall trees. Alice became quickly lost in this strange forest. She was afraid until she found a tree that had been hit by lightning. The top branches had long splintered off. And there was a long black cut through the tree leading towards the base. At the tree's base was a small hole, no bigger than herself. Alice peeked inside and saw that there was a small tunnel leading into a dark cavern. "I have found Wonderland!" she thought excitedly.

Alice crawled into the tight hole without thinking. As she moved forward into the tunnel she could feel a rush of cold air coming from below her. As the wind blew toward the tight opening, the ground started to give way. Alice fell into darkness. But she was not afraid, glee and happiness took over her heart as she floated downward into the unknown. She had no fear. She was finally going to Wonderland.

Alice landed with a heavy thump as her lifeless body hit the ground. Above, at the mouth of the cavern, a curious white rabbit peered down into the darkness, then scurried off as a gust of cold air startled it. Alice had found Wonderland.
